Slate bed Snooker Tables
These are the kings of snooker tables. Although expensive compared to their wooden top brothers, they give the best playing experience. From the
7 foot Kensington table to the majestic Riley Aristocrat Tournament Champion World Class Snooker Table which is used in all the ranking snooker tournaments in the UK and beyond.
The Riley 12 foot Tournament snooker table
These are the tables to have if you have the room, see Room size for tables to check if you have the room required. Slate bed tables are heavy as well from 500 lbs ( 227 kgs) to over 2000 lbs (909 Kgs) for the full blown 12 foot table. The number of legs vary also depending on the length of the table. Up to 8 foot the slate bed tables have just 4 legs, 9 and 10 foot tables have 6 legs, and 11 and full size snooker tables have 8 legs. So that each leg will support approximately 250 lbs (114 kgs). A full size slate bed table however actually occupies a floor in excess of 70 square feet so the average weight per square foot is about 28 lbs 12.5 kgs.
This means most floors will support a slate bed snooker table as the weight is distributed evenly over the 8 legs without the need for special strengthening. Obviously if you have any doubts consult a reputable builder.
Slate bed tables also require professional installation, as it has to be assembled on site. On the full size snooker tables, there are 5 slate blocks usually 1 1/2 inches thick, which gives most of the weight of the table. Its a minor miracle how these slates are joined together so closely the joins do not interfere at all with play.
The slates are then covered with woollen cloth, the 'green baize'. and on snooker tables, the cloth is laid so that the 'nap' of the cloth runs from the D area to the black spot.
Slate bed Snooker Tables, if they are to be kept in good condition, need a simple bit of maintenance now and again.
Regular brushing is essential, always brush with the nap of the table, from the baulk or D end to the black spot end. Start with your brush at the D end and walk up the table to other end of your snooker table.
Always brush in straight lines up the table, where all the debris will then collect at the top cushion, where it can be brushed into one of the top pockets.?
Clean the wood, with a damp cloth, the wood varnish is usually so hard, that is all that is required to remove the dust. If you use a spray polish, spray the duster first then apply to the wood, so you don't spray the cloth.
It is also a good idea to occasionally vacuum the table, making sure to use mild suction with a fine brush attachment. As usual vacuum the table from the D end to the black spot end as in brushing.

Just to let you know the soccer table is all put together and hiding in the
garage. My husband (who is ultra fussy about these things) said how impressed he
was with the instructions and the way all the components were not only there but
also so well labelled! Many thanks.
